Trophy Fishing Program Announced
The odds just improved at Salmon Falls Resort. Each guest landing a 17 pound or larger Coho (silver) salmon, or a 37 pound or larger Chinook (King) salmon during 2005 will recieve a custom Salmon Falls Resort trophy, engraved with their name and catch details, in recognitition of their achievement.

This prestigous award would make a fine addition to your desk top or trophy shelf. It is compliments of Salmon Falls Resort. Because fishing has been good in this region of Alaska's Inside Passage, there is a limit of one trophy per guest stay.

Halibut Celebration and Certificate
These great fish frequently run over 100 pounds, and each year some tip the scales at over 300 pounds. It is a long established tradition at Salmon Falls Resort that all guests landing a 100 pound or larger halibut are greeted at the dock by resort staff, serving chilled champagne to those aboard the angler's boat. Effective this year, in addition to the 100 pound halibut dock-side celebration, the honored guest will recieve an attractive Alaska Halibut Certificate, customized with the angler's name and catch details, and endorsed by the caption/guide. This official recognition achievement is perfect for framing!

Salmon Falls Resort in Ketchikan, Alaska was created to provide the ultimate experience to those seeking the best of Alaska's world class sport fishing.

Salmon Falls Resort, is a long strip of land that runs from the Kenai Peninsula along the edge of British Columbia. This area is a maze of islands and canals and is one of the least-known and most beautiful areas of North America.

Huge forests of spruce, nurtured by a heavy rainfall and mild winters, follow the mountain sites right down to the saltwater. The streams are crystal clear (with the exception of the larger glacial runoffs) and cold. In the saltwater of the coastal inlets and channels, trolling for salmon and halibut provides sport and nourishment for native and tourist alike, while the freshwater lakes and streams abound in cutthroat and rainbow trout, with salmon and steelhead as seasonal migrants.

Southeast Alaska is true wilderness. There are no roads and villages are few and far between. It is the land of the light plane, the backpacker, and those who wants to get as far away from "civilization" as possible. Paradoxically, the area is very easily reached by commercial airlines or by boat.

Local Fish Species
The most significant fish in Southeast Alaska is the Pacific salmon. Each year during summer and fall five species return to spawn in the region's rivers and streams. Halibut and sablefish along with Pacific perch and rockfish are also commercially important fish. Dolly Varden, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, grayling and steelhead trout are found in large numbers for sport fishing.

(Chinook) Salmon
Avg. 15-50 Trophy 50 Lbs.
Alaska's state fish and one of the most important sport fish native to the Pacific coast of North America. In the ocean, the King salmon is a robust, deep-bodied fish with a bluish-green coloration on the back, which fades, to a silvery color on both sides and white on the belly. The king salmon is perhaps the most highly prized sport fish in Alaska. Trolling with rigged herring is the favored method of angling in saltwater.

Chinook Salmon
Silver (Coho) Salmon
Avg. 12-15 Trophy 20 Lbs.
Found Southeast Alaska coastal waters and extremely adaptable. They also occur in nearly all-accessible bodies of freshwater. Adult in salt water or newly arrived in fresh water are bright silver with small black spots on the back and on the upper lobe of the caudal fin. The silver salmon is a premier sport fish and is taken in fresh and salt water.

Silver (Coho) Salmon
Pink (Humpback) Salmon
Avg. 4-5 Trophy 9 Lbs.
An adult fish returning to coastal waters is bright steely blue on top and silvery on the sides with many large black spots on the back and entire tail fin. Its scales are very small and the flesh is pink. Most pink salmon spawn within a few miles of the coast and spawning within the intertidal zone at the mouth of streams are very common. This species is plentiful in the region.

Pink (Humpback) Salmon
Sockeye (Red) Salmon
Avg. 5-7 Trophy 12 Lbs.
Can be distinguished from other Pacific salmon by the long, slender gill rakers on the first gill arch as well as the lack of large spots on the back and tail. Sockeye salmon are anadromous; they spend much of their life in the ocean but enter fresh water to spawn. The popularity of sport fishing for sockeye salmon is rapidly growing.

Sockeye (Red) Salmon
Chum Salmon
Avg. 12 Trophy 15 Lbs.
Ocean fresh chum salmon are metallic greenish-blue on the dorsal surface (top) with fine blue speckles. Chum have fewer but larger gill rakers than other salmon. Sport fishermen generally catch chum salmon incidental to fishing for other Pacific salmon in either salt or fresh water.

Chum Salmon
Rockfish
Avg. 4-6 Lbs.
More than 30 species occur in Alaska's coastal waters. Adult rockfish range in size from 5 to 41 inches, with most species attaining sizes between 20 to 24 inches. These fish are characterized by a large mouth, and pelvic fins attached forward near the pectoral fins. Rock fish appear somewhat perch-like or bass-like, and are often called sea bass. All species have flesh that is delicious to eat.

Pacific Halibut
Avg. 25-100 Trophy 100 Lbs.
Are more elongated than most flatfish, the width being about one-third the length. Halibut have both eyes on their dark upper side; the color on the dark side varies but tends to assume the coloration of the ocean bottom. The underside is lighter, appearing more like the sky from below. Halibut are regarded as a highly desirable sport fish.

Pacific Halibut
Dolly Varden
Avg. 1-3 Trophy 8 Lbs.
Belong to a group of fish called char. The light spots on their sides distinguish them from most trout and salmon, which are usually black spotted or speckled. Anadromous and freshwater resident varieties are found throughout the southern part of Southeast Alaska. Dolly Varden is one of Alaska's most important and sought after sport fish.

Dolly Varden
Cutthroat Trout
Avg. 1-3 Trophy 6
Cutthroat occur as both sea-run and resident. The resident form lives in a wide variety of habitat, from small headwater tributaries, to large lakes and rivers. Sea-run cutthroat are usually found in river or stream systems with accessible lakes. Cutthroat are aggressive feeders and will hit almost any bait, lure or fly.

Cutthroat Trout
Grayling
Avg. 1-2 Trophy 3 Lbs.
The grayling is an elegantly formed cousin of the trout. They are one of the most unusual and beautiful fish of Alaska. Grayling are generally dark on the back and have iridescent gray sided. They have varying numbers of black spots scattered along the anterior portion of both sides. Grayling are especially popular because of their willingness to rise to a dry fly.

Grayling
Rainbow Trout
Avg. 2 Trophy 10 Lbs.
Often one of the most respected and sought after of Alaska's native game fish. Rainbow trout occur as both freshwater resident and sea-run races. They possess the well-known streamlined salmon form. Rainbow trout are voracious feeders and strong swimmers, willing to hit a wide variety of lures, baits, and flies.

Rainbow Trout
Steelhead Trout
